Dating back as far as the 17th Century and from Japanese Origins. Whilst Kimono's were the traditional costume, they contained no pockets or anywhere to store anything. (we're not talking mobile phones here obviously!) small pouches were created and these were attached to the belt around the kimono with toggles and were known as Netsuke. They became quite the fashion accessory, the original ones being made out of wood, stone, precious metals and ivory. The originals are now cherished collectables and sell for thousands of pounds, these on the other hand, and a bit more high street in price...
